Patriot raises serious concern over reports published (The Malay Mail and Free Malaysia Today, 29 August 2021) on claims of Malaysian politicians having received regular funding and moral backing from foreign organizations and individuals.
In the interest of national security, public assurance and principles of good governance, Patriot takes serious cognizance of the revelations (apparent allegations) made by none other than a former Director General of the Defence Military Intelligence (DMI) Unit.
As reported in the media, Lt Gen Dato Salleh Ismail had alleged that ‘Malaysian politicians had received regular funding and moral backing from foreign organizations and individuals’. He claimed that he ‘received intelligence reports of correspondence between Malaysian politicians and their foreign backers’. He further alleged that ‘physical assets and hard cash were among the form of support given by the foreign backers to the Malaysian politicians.
As veterans who had served in the security forces of Malaysia, Patriot is well aware that politicians are known to have been in liaison with staffs of foreign embassies which under normal circumstances and procedurally is nothing unusual.
Likewise, military intelligence staffs do maintain liaison with their military counterparts of foreign embassies for purposes of intelligence sharing.
However what is unusual is the Lt. General DG’s allegation that the unnamed politician(s) had received regular funding in cash, physical assets and moral support from un-named foreigners.
When offers of such nature handed to politicians and more so, on a regular basis, then there is every reason to question whether something amiss is going on between the politician(s) and the foreigner(s).
Patriot strongly recommends that the Special Branch of the Malaysian Police should initiate a thorough investigation without any delay – if it not done yet, over the allegations made by the former DMI.
As the revelation has serious implications that could jeopardize national security, encroach on our sovereign status and further plunge the people’s worsening trust deficit in politicians, Patriot demands that the following questions must be addressed by the government of the day:
1. Was there any serious breach of national security?
2. Details of the cash, and what were the assets received by the politician?
3. Who else is implicated in this highly questionable act committed, and to what extent has it gone unreported or arrested?
4. Was the liaison sanctioned by the party leadership of the politician(s) and/or over-riding all protocols in place?
5. Whom does the politician report after a liaison has been concluded with a specific foreigner?
Patriot’s members remain committed to patriotism and national harmony as these are the pillars of our mission and our service to our beloved nation.
In this regard, Patriot treats the breaking news from an ex-DG from the DMI with utmost seriousness and registers its concern publicly. There is a serious element of national security here including concerns over national sovereignty which all citizens have a vested obligation to safeguard at all times.
Patriot urges all national security agencies to work together in addressing this matter that is of great concern in the public domain.
