PATRIOT URGES INVESTIGATION INTO ILLEGAL WORKS OF CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA
With reference to the current spate of revelation, accusation, denial, and counter accusation regarding the illegal data mining and electioneering works of Cambridge Analytica and its parent SCL group, Persatuan Patriot Kebangssan (Patriot) strongly urges the authorities to start investigation immediately. We have in our media statement on 21 March 2018 stated that the whole illegal covert operation possibly has elements of spying and espionage, and urged the authorities to investigate.
In the expose by the British Channel 4 News, prominent corporate leaders of Cambridge Analytica, the big data analytics firm, were filmed boasting they could extort politicians, send women to entrap them, and help proliferate propaganda to help their clients. According to the website of Cambridge Analytica and the Channel 4 News expose, the former has done work for political parties in a number of countries, including Malaysia.
The covert work of Cambridge Analytica mining and using data from Facebook accounts contradicts with the Personal Data Protection principles, among which is that prior consent from individuals has to be obtained. It infringed our Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Cambridge Analytica’s notorious work of using women to entrap politicians may be viewed through ethics. However, clandestine works using propaganda to disseminate any information, in the form of false news through the social media to instigate negative emotions to hate, confuse, divide, and cause disharmony among the Malaysian people; are works of agents to destroy our country. Any local political party conniving and accomplice to such dastardly and illegal conduct must be seriously delt with by the law.
Patriot finds the latest denial and accusation of SCL’s South East Asia chief, Azrin Zizal, very odd. If indeed he had been engaged in spying work during the GE13, he would probably be sealing his mouth and not say that he has done work for Mukhriz Mahathir. Azrin’s overstatement is telling that he and his company may be working for certain party, in this GE14. If true, such illegal activities must be stopped and legal action to be taken against the perpetrators and their accomplices.
